Despite the fact they broke up more than three years ago, 2014 has been a very busy for R.E.M. Back in April, they issued deluxe versions of their two performances on MTV's Unplugged. In May, the Godfathers of College Rock unloaded an exhaustive collection of rarities for iTunes and had all of their studio albums remastered for release in digital formats. Don't get me started on mastering for iTunes. Then, just last week they revealed a trailer for a documentary chronicling the band's history that will be released in November as a part of a massive 6 DVD set that collects the band's TV appearances, interviews and a slew of videos. That's a lot of activity for a dormant act.
Now, R.E.M. have announced that on Dec. 9 they'll be releasing R.E.M. 7 IN 83-88, a collection of eleven singles and b-sides that were recorded for and released by the band's original label, I.R.S. Records. The set will feature original artwork and will include a pair of singles that were only ever released in the U.K.
