On the eve of the inauguration of President Trump, Arcade Fire have released a brand new video and single for "I Give You Power", a brand new track they've recorded with legend Mavis Staples. This is the first new music from the band, since 2013's Reflektor LP.
We recently mentioned that Arcade Fire have a new record slated for release in 2017, but it remains to be seen whether "I Give You Power" will be included on that album. To be sure the band's message of opposition to Mr. Trump and his ilk is clear, Arcade Fire have pledged to donate all proceeds from the single to ACLU.org.
Win Butler spoke with Zane Lowe today on Beats 1 and had this to say about the new single and its' timing, "“It’s the eve of the inauguration and I think it’s easy to get sucked into sitting on the couch and checking your news feed and watching things on CNN, and we’re just musicians and the only thing we have to offer is our music.” He continued, “I talked to Mavis last night and she said, ‘Now more than ever we just need to hold onto each other.’ For us it’s a feeling of solidarity—to not feel powerless and focus on what we can do as individuals and try to do our part.”
